Title: EOP Transfer Bridge Programs: Evidence Programming Based on Outcomes and Experiences

Program Description: Attendees will gain a perspective of how to formalize evaluation procedures for summer bridge programs and how to easily incorporate these tools into students’ activities. The presentation will cover topics such as creating mission statements, goals, learning outcomes, and how quantitative tools to measure program effectiveness produce data for program improvement.

Program Description: Examining the Evidence: History of the conception and implementation of the first Educational Opportunity Program which began on the campus of Long Beach State with Dr. Joseph White in collaboration with colleagues, community activists, and Assemblyman Willie Brown who helped create the Harmer Bill in 1966-69.

Program Description: At CSUN, a community service class in the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies was reimagined for EOP student leadership and authentic community engagement, leading to dramatic increase in EOP applications. Program Description: Guardian Scholars Programs from Cal State LA, CSU Dominguez, CSU Long Beach, Los Angeles City College and El Camino College took more than 60 college students, who identify as current or former foster youth, on a personal development retreat aimed at challenging negative self-perceptions by identifying personal strengths. Hear from students who allowed themselves to be challenged by physical activities while also participating in emotionally supportive workshops and discussions that promoted self-discovery and personal success. Attendees will learn the unique needs students of foster care have and the level of institutional commitment required to aid in their sense of community and belonging. Members from the respective colleges and universities will share the origination of the program and retreat concept and its subsequent expansion.

Title: EOP Best Practices for Proactive eAdvising using Student Success Collaborate (SSC) Navigate

Program Description: In this session, we will explore how the CSULB EOP Program has utilized the eAdvising tool, Student Success Collaborative (SSC) Navigate, to promote retention and timely graduation. We will share the different types of targeted advising campaigns implemented and lessons learned since the facilitation of SSC Navigate. EOP advisors or counselors will have opportunity to learn best practices on implementing the Student Success Collaborative (SSC) Navigate; specifically focusing on how to create proactive advising campaigns for Financial Aid, Undeclared, Transfer, and students on academic probation.This presentation will provide guidelines and strategies for campuses who are new to SSC Navigate, and those transitioning to using SSC Navigate in the future.

Title: Academic Success Workshop Series: A model for change for students on academic probation

Program Description: Cal State LA EOP has supported students on academic probation through a series of seminars called Academic Success Workshop (ASW) for more than 20 years. In 2016 the ASW curriculum was adapted to use the dual theoretical frameworks of ADKAR and Appreciative Advising. The theory informed changes, allow EOP professionals to challenged students’ preexisting attitudes and behaviors that constrain their ability to succeed in the classroom. Data from 2016 through 2019 will be shared to highlight program effectiveness and student success.

Title: Establishing a transfer culture for Foster Youth

Program Description: The foster youth student population is one of the most underserved on college campuses across the nation. According to the National Foster Youth Institute, less than 3% of foster youth graduate from college. Presenter will outline the five elements of the Transfer Receptive Culture (TRC) Theory, that are necessary to establish a sense of belonging and community and outline specific strategies with each factor that practitioners can employ on their campuses.

Program Description: This session will detail how Sonoma State University has developed community partnerships which resulted in more than $3 million in philanthropic support for EOP. Attendees will be able to learn about SSU’s model on specific strategies with fundraising and community engagement to assist them with their own fundraising efforts.

Title: Mentality, Confidence and Affirmation: EOP Winter Recharge Retention Strategy for At-Risk Students

Program Description: During this session, the presenters will describe an EOP Winter Recharge, an innovative retention and student success program which focuses on individualized academic preparation, including an academic achievement plan that strives to increase four-year graduation rates. Research has shown that although first-year retention programs are effective at the retention of students, not many strategies have been developed to target second or third year students. Presenters will provide information regarding the implementation and evaluation of EOP Winter Recharge, as well as considerations for establishment of this program at other institutions.

Title: Success and How to Leverage It: The Story of SDSU EOP’s Summer Bridge Program

Program Description: Multi-year evidence demonstrates that the SDSU EOP BEST Summer Bridge Program improves first-year performance (retention, probation, and GPA) for participants. Sharing this data on campus garnered attention and increased support for program expansion. The experience presents a model for leveraging data to promote program growth for other EOP programs.

Title: Educating the Excluded: What Led to the Mandate for Educational Opportunity at California State University

Program Description: “Educating the Excluded: What Led to the Mandate for Educational Opportunity at California State University” was first published by the Cal State LA EOP so that students could know the history of the program. Cal State student activists in the 1960s worked to create public awareness of the inequality low-income students faced in obtaining higher education. The book “Educating the Excluded” tells the stories of the students and political players who were key to getting the groundbreaking Harmer Bill passed in 1969. This presentation by the book’s author will feature excerpts from the book, and slides of historical photos of campus unrest. The goal is that the audience will learn more about the fascinating stories behind the origins of the Educational Opportunity Program, including the perspective of John Harmer, who introduced the Harmer Bill which made EOP part of the Cal State institution.

Title: Do You Feel Like a Fake Noodle? Understanding and Reconciling Our Experiences with Imposter Syndrome

Program Description: This workshop will offer an opportunity to better understand an increasingly common experience for students and working professionals. Often referred to as reoccurring feelings of self-doubt, a lack of belonging, along with internalized fears of being exposed as a fraud; the Imposter Syndrome can impact the ability of individuals to reach their full potential. Participants will explore relevant concepts, engage in a dialogue and begin to develop ways to overcome the associated fears.

Program Description: Presenters will focus primarily on two freshmen Bridge Programs and will demonstrate how a paradigm shift created an integrated learning community that not only bridged students into the university but also bridged their experience between the academic part of the university and student service aspect. EOP faculty and staff will discuss the different aspects of program integration. The presenters will also discuss the long term learning communities created in the summer that continue up to three semesters and give an overview of the unified linked curriculum, as a common core so that all students have a similar experience. Examples of reading material, films etc. will be provided.

Program Description: This session will provide attendees with a roadmap for how to implement a peer mentoring program for foster youth. Participants will learn about the guiding framework used by Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona and share best practices on developing and implementing a Peer Mentoring Program to support the success, sense of belonging, and work opportunities for college-going foster youth. Presenters will share lessons learned, tips for success, and funding models for their Peer Mentoring Programs.

Program Description: Advising and Academic Services at CSU San Bernardino utilizes a success course as an intervention tool for undergraduate students on academic probation. Attendees will learn strategies using motivation, appreciative advising and coaching techniques in the classroom and office setting when working with students on academic probation.

Program Description: This session highlights innovative programing practices to make your Summer Bridge Program effective, sustainable, and unique. Creating ongoing re-vamped Summer Bridge Program models can be difficult, but offering different modalities for success is essential. This session will showcase how to offer an online Summer Bridge, and On-the ground Summer Bridge, and a Fall Bridge course. Attendees will learn how to create an innovative Summer Bridge program that will offer different methods to reach a variety of students. Attendees will be able to understand new approaches to Summer Bridge that will help with student engagement and programatic success.

Program Description: An adaptable professional development structure for institutions and academic advisors. Advising is a key component to student retention and graduation. Professional development however, is oftentimes missing, resulting in lack of training and growth opportunities for those that serve in an advising capacity. In order to aid this issue, a Professional Advisor Community was created at CSU, San Bernardino. Through this community, we have seen tremendous growth in cross collaborations, partnerships, advisor retention and career satisfaction. Topics include: Critical Race Theory, Personality assessment, a three-day intensive learning institute, wellness and mindfulness activities, growth mindset discussions and integration of campus partners. Participants will learn how to create their own advising and learning institutes and workshops with little to no office budget.

Attendees will learn the intricacies involved in creating, organizing, and managing a student organization that is affiliated with the goals and objectives of EOP.
