EOP Alumni Sommer Hayes

Thinking of the EOP family at Chico State often brings tears of joy and happiness—without this program I would not have graduated from college. The support EOP provided me can be compared to a “life navigator” of sorts. Every person in EOP was dedicated to the success of every student.

As a child, I remember watching a scene in a 90’s sitcom called, “A Different World,” where I used to dream of college being exactly like the imaginary Hillman College. I was intrigued that everyone knew each other by name, operated in love, was happy and thriving, flourishing, and fostered a rich and supportive environment…. Only to come to Chico State EOP years later and realize my dreams were not that far from reality!

EOP served as the support I needed to prosper in Chico and as a road map to my overall success as a student. I graduated in 2005, but the bond the EOP family at Chico State provided is one that lasts a lifetime. I remember I was interviewing for a job a few years after I graduated from Chico State. They offered me the job, but I needed to come up with a pay figure and a justification for my offer within 30 minutes and I decided I’d call the EOP office and ask Christopher Malone. He gave me the best advice and encouragement I needed to confidently negotiate the pay. EOP still supported me even after graduation!
In 2008, I was diagnosed with cancer and I beat it! As a result, it prompted a career change from advertising to nonprofit management which is a constant reminder to not take life for granted, make every day count and operate in love.
