Reminiscing back to my time at Cal Poly Pomona in the Educational Opportunity Program, I remember all the smiling faces who were encouraging; always uplifting and positive. It was support that I did not know I needed, I will always appreciate that.
Growing up homeless and transitioning into foster care, my main goal was to graduate high school. I had the support of a lot of individuals who encouraged me to take my education a step further and apply for college. Being accepted to a 4-year university is a major accomplishment for me. EOP helped me stay on track not only to graduate from CPP with honors, but also gain acceptance into a graduate program. I am now a candidate for a doctoral degree in physical therapy at the University of Southern California. This would not have been possible had I not been an EOP student.
Being in the Educational Opportunity Program at Cal Poly Pomona allowed for me to tap into my potential as a student. Tutorial services guided me to develop my own studying style, critical thinking skills and finding alternative methods to achieve answers. Meeting with my EOP mentors helped me focus on my career aspirations and manage my time in between classes to study. These skills are essential in higher education because these (skills) are expected. As a first generation college student it is not something we are particularly exposed to but EOP helps incorporate them.
My message to current EOP students is, it is easy to give up, the true challenge lies in pushing yourself to achieve your dreams and not settling for less. Let’s be real, you do not want to settle for less, that’s why you are here.
Reach out for help, it is a sign of growth.
