Manuel Cardoza
The first memory I have of EOP is Summer Bridge. Summer Bridge helped me prepare for what was awaiting me at the University; not just the work, but also the freedom that comes from living in a University environment. Secondly, my EOP counselor, Ms. Carolyn Stevens-Patton was truly a blessing. I could tell that she loved her students and loved what she did. She was instrumental in making sure I was on track for graduation. I am most proud of being ordained to the priesthood in 2009. I am also proud of being named Pastor of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Community in San Bernardino, giving me a chance to give back to the community that helped me reach my ultimate goal of being a priest. Without EOP, I would not have gotten into CSUSB. I was given access to the university through EOP. The lessons that I learned from EOP is that we are not islands; we all need help at various times in our lives. Whether it is our family, friends, teachers, associates, strangers or God himself, we have all been assisted at various points in our lives. Over the years, I have witnessed many who were assisted by EOP give back to their community, some are the counselors who are helping a new generation of EOP students. Find what you are passionate about, do what will bring you joy and fulfillment and that helps others be the best they can be. Money, will come and go, but the joy and fulfillment that comes with doing what you are passionate about will never disappear and the gratitude of those whom you helped be the best of themselves will always be there. Go and change the world!
