EOP Alumni Hank Guitierrez

When I reflect back on my first college experience at Fresno State in the fall of 1988, EOP represented the “safety net” for success that I so desperately needed. Growing up with a single mother who was a welfare recipient and who did not possess a college degree, I had no way to navigate college. EOP provided me with constant mentorship, counseling, and motivation – the “blueprint” for success. What I’ve reflected upon many times over the last fifteen years is the sense of hope that EOP provided for me. I vividly remember feeling as if I had to persevere, not only make my mother proud, but to keep striving for the EOP staff. What has compelled me over the last few years is that EOP instilled in me the “obligation to succeed” and to always strive for more.

If you can imagine growing up in a small farm town with a single mother, I am most proud of being named the principal of my alma mater– Fowler High School in 2010. What made my time as principal even sweeter, were the accomplishments I was able to achieve as a team.

EOP has instilled in me a relentless pursuit to strive for more. EOP was willing to take a chance on granting me acceptance, I’ve never taken that opportunity for granted. EOP allowed me to reach goals that I never imagined possible and through my profession, I’ve been able to pay it forward to countless students across the Central Valley. I never wanted to let EOP down – I want to bring their guiding principles to live through my hard work and perseverance. MAKE EXCELLENCE A HABIT: Work Ethic, Perseverance, and Attention to Detail.
