When I think of EOP the first thing that comes to my mind is that I did not know what was in store for me. As a first-generation college student in my family, coming from a financially disadvantaged background, I was completely unaware of resources available to assist me in college, especially EOP. I remember as a senior in high school one of the counselors came to me and said, “Here, this might be something you would be interested in,” and handed me an application for EOP. All I thought it was at the time was another financial option for college. Little did I know I would go on to become part of a great group of individuals from students to professionals. I remember summer orientation and meeting new people that would support me along my journey. During my first semester I made connections. As I continued in college I was able to then give back by helping first-year students as a paraprofessional and through orientation programs. I am grateful to be a part of such a great program.

One accomplishment I am proud of is where I am today as a whole. My mother did not have a high school diploma and struggled over the years to support her children financially. I can provide to my children opportunities I did not have growing up. I attribute this accomplishment to my higher education because that has allowed me to work in a field that I love and provide a stable life to myself and my family. EOP was an integral part of my accomplishments, giving me a stable foundation and positive attitude towards education.

EOP helped me to realize possibilities I never knew I had. I think back to my involvement with EOP over my undergraduate career and working in the office as a paraprofessional. I now am in the helping profession and I am reminded that it was helping students through EOP that sparked the interest I have today. EOP was a foundational support that carried me through my undergraduate education and beyond.

If I had any words of wisdom to new EOP students it would be to take full advantage of the help, support and love that this program has to offer. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
